“Believe in yourself…”
Like Rafaela Montanaro, an elite athlete who bases her success not only on her abilities but also on her mental strength, to be able to overcome and continue to grow in the discipline of the pole. She is not only a woman, she is also a very special one! Here…Rafaela Montanaro!
Rafaela, would you tell us how you got to Pole Dance?
Back in Brazil, In 2008 I was finishing physical Education Bachalor degree and was doing research in circus arts. While looking for chinese pole videos I came across Felix Cane’s performance Miss Pole Dance Australia 2006 and it blew my mind! She was strong, flexible, elegant, and I wanted to be just like her! So I went to look for classes. But back in dinosaur ‘s day there were not many places that taught it… it was only in May of 2009 that I found a place that seemed right for me so I went to try it! On my first class the teacher said “Rafa I think you could be really good! Nationals is happening in September, would you like to compete? And I said: Yes! For sure! So I strated working on my choreography the very next day.
How is your life outside of sport?
I’m a very low key person, very shy and introverted. I like to read, (I have been taking special pleasure in philosophy and psychology) play video games and spend time woth my family and dogs. I also have hobbies that are pole related, like editing music, making videos, embelishing costumes.
Within your career as an athlete of the Pole, what moments would you highlight?
Definitely winning and having the highest score record ( that still stands) on the World Championships. Once for IPSF and 2 times for POSA.
Any phrase identify you?
“If it was easy, everybody would do it” “Winning is a habit. Watch your thoughts, they become your beliefs. Watch your beliefs, they become your words. Watch your words, they become your actions. Watch your actions, they become your habits. Watch your habits, they become your character”
According to your experience, what are the benefits that the discipline of Pole Dance brings to the athletes who practice it?
Like any other sport, it brings self confidence, which comes through discipline, and believing you can be better. Not to mention the physical benefits, like improved strength, flexiblity, coordination and endurance.
With what other disciplines do you complement this activity?
I do at least 1 hour of cardio every day, and the kind I do, varies a lot. Anything from jogging outside, to swimming, spinning or the treadmill. When I can I also take dance classes, and I am planning to start tennis classes.
A message that you want?
Believe in yourself. Only the one who believes will fully commit to their dream. And only the one who fully commits will succed. So believing is essencial to succeding. You are stronger than you know.
